Oyster Farmer - How We Respond
Series Lead Editor
When oyster larvae in the Whiskey Creek Shellfish Hatchery began dying en masse, hatchery manager Alan Barton sought clues to the underlying cause. After partnering with marine scientist Burke Hales and studying local ocean chemistry, they were able to identify the root cause – ocean acidification – and adjust their farming practices to save oyster production.
I worked as the lead editor with Impact Media Lab on a film series called How We Respond for the American Association for the Advancement of Science. These stories – involving local governments, nonprofits, businesses and the public – demonstrate a range of climate responses at the community level, and present solutions and approaches that could be adapted for other communities. This series was intended to inspire further climate action, and you can learn more about that here: AAAS
